Tecnorati Revamp?

Technorati LogoAfter writing the previous post on Joost and I went to ping Technorati I saw that they have revamped there website. I mean they have actually revamped there website and have not given it a face lift like most websites. They have changed there “Sign In” form from a small toolbar like “Digg” to a brand new shiny light box!

Technorai Log In

Cool isn’t it. They have also added an array of slick new features to the website lately. Like of course Technorati Authority. Also now on the top there is a bar that shows the latests searches mades on Technorati (<<snip, snip>>)  scrolling. Apart from the header the basic overall design is approximately the same.

Technorati

I really like what they have done to there website. Unlike the other who just seem to ditch the old user interface and make a new one from scratch to get some hype for a few days, the Technrati people are actually working on what they have and are doing a great job :).

Joost!

Joost IconSo I finally go a Joost invitation from the Joost and TechCrunch initiative to spread Joost invitations. So I signed up and downloaded it. Its pretty neat. I really liked the interface and stuff. But there is one problem, If I pause any video if just shows me an error that I can view the video now. Nor can I see anything else now from that channel.

Joost

So I see the video (actual movement) for about 2 seconds and then a long pause. This is bad .There should be way that I can stream it first and view it afterwards so that there is a pause free viewing.

Otherwise the video quality is great and there is a lot of variety as well. Tell me if you want an invite 😀

FamFamFam Icons: IE Issues

FamFamFamEveryone knows about the extremely popular open source FamFamFam icons created by Mark James. I am a fan of these icons as they are very clean and have no copyright issues and stuff. Even though there are several free icons like the Tango Icon Gallery they still do not have as many icons or the same quality as FamFamFam.

There is just on itsy-bisty problem with the “Silk Icon Set” of FamFamFam. As you might know that all icons are 16X16 PNG files. These PNG files have some transparency for, well the transparent part of the icon. All this is perfect but the problem in Internet Explorer ( like always). If you put these icons on a website and view it through IE then instead of the transparent area you would see a gray background.

I am not sure whether it is Mark James fault that he hasn’t saved transparency correctly or it is IE’s fault. So if you want to successfully use FamFamFam icons on IE you will have to use either PhotoShop or IrfanView to save them as GIF and then use them. I might be converting all of them into GIF and posting them here soon (though I am not too sure about the copyright issues that might arise).

If you are a user of FamFamFam Icons be cure to check out the Icon Selector for the Silk Icons!

Thomas Fuchs: Rails Conference

Thomas FuchsThe only tutorial that I am excited about or the only one that I might be able to understand would be Is JavaScript Overrated? Or: How I Stopped Worrying and Put Prototype and script.aculo.us to Full Use by Thomas Fuchs.

Thomas Fuchs is the guy who is part of the Prototype Core Team and has written script.aculo.us which is an animation library. I so totally want to be there but obviously I cant cause it is so expensive for me as apart from the normal charges I would have to go all the way to the US and me being in high school right now rules out all the possibilities of that happening.

Web 2.0.1

This is something that I found on Ajaxian so I thought I would share it. The original copy can be found at unitedHeroes

We would like to alert you that there’s been a patch release to Web 2.0 to address some minor bugs and address valuable new features. Although this is a minor upgrade, and should not effect your use of Web 2.0, please note the following changes.

Bug 84318192-b: We’ve addressed a problem with the automatic product revision system that caused products to be stuck at “beta” level. Please note that many of these projects are actually Version 1.0 (with several at Version 2.0).

Bug 84399290.3: We’ve also noticed that the term “version” when applied to a web based application is kind of dumb. It’s not like you can uninstall “News” and use a previous version anyway.

Bug 84410000: The use of weird names for products is not a bug, it’s a feature.

Bug 84435923: There have been an inordinate number of map based applications. This was due to a programming creativity glitch. Shock collars have been distributed.

Bug 85211006: Due to various copyright issues and a new sponsorship plan, the use of Javascript and DHTML to modify pages shall be called “DR-BRONNERS”

Bug 85732641: We thought about introducing an RSS feed of the current time, but decided it was dumb. So we did it anyway. XML

Bug 86753090: We were thinking about allowing page generators to specify various tags associated with the content they generate. Then we realized those were covered by “meta:keywords”, overrun by spammers and now nobody uses them. So we changed the name, they’re now called “Generator Tags”. We understand several startups announced this morning are basing their business model off of them.

Bug 93242381: … PROFIT! (Yeah, still working on that one.)

We urge all current Web 2.0 users to upgrade to Web 2.0.1 as soon as possible.
